Emblica officinalis (Amla) is an Ayurvedic herb and is considered as one of the most precious gifts of nature to mankind. It is an important ingredient of some of the famous ayurvedic formulations mainly Chyawanprash, Trifala powder and Amlaki rasayan. It is widely used in Ayurveda and is believed to increase defense against various diseases. It has been traditionally used for a number of purposes including enhancing general ability, improving digestion, wellness of eyes and overall longevity of life.






Morphology of plant


It is a small medium sized tree grown up to 8 to 18 meters in height, and having asymmetrical shape with spreading branches. The leaves are oval shaped and very short in size up to 7 -10 cm long. Greenish yellow color flowers and fruits are appears. The  fruits are shown fleshy  with  sour, astringent taste with spherical in shape and six vertical bands.

 

Medicinaly Useful Parts


All parts of the plant are medicinaly useful including the fresh fruit, dried fruit, seed, leaves, root, bark and flowers.

 

How to use and Dosage


1. In Powder Form : 1-3 gms once or twice daily

2. In Juice Form - 15-30 ml/day

3. In Paste form - as an excellent hair conditioner which makes hair glossy and silky.

Some common home remedies and formulations related to Amla are :

 

For Blood Sugar Control : One teaspoon of Amla juice mixed with a cup of    bitter    gourd    juice    is    prescribed    by naturopaths  as  it  stimulates  the  Pancreas  and it   will   secrete   enough   insulin   for   reducing blood   sugar. 


For High Cholesterol : A 500mg capsule  of  dried  Amla  powder  can  be  added to   your   daily   routine   after   consulting   with your doctor.


For Cough : Add a teaspoon of Amla juice or powder to a glass of warm milk and drink this thrice a day. This will clear an unpleasant  throat, adding some ghee to this decoction will clear a cough. Mix Amla powder with honey and suck this mixture twice a day to cure a chronic dry cough. Amla is invaluable in the treatment of tuberculosis, asthma and bronchitis.


For Diarrhoea : Amla has a strong, cooling property on the body and is an excellent remedy for diarrhea. Squeeze the juice out of a  handful of Amla leaves into a glass of milk. Add some honey and ghee to this milk and drink it to stop loose motions that are accompanied  with mucous and/or blood.


For Healthy Hair : Dried amla fruits are boiled in coconut oil and then ground to form amla oil. This is a very effective conditioner and prevents balding and graying of hair.

 

Amalaki has a very interesting property when eaten fresh. It is very sour when you bite into it, but after a few minutes it becomes sweet in the mouth.
