Ayurveda is a natural way of healing. It is based on using herbs and minerals found naturally on this earth in treating all kind of diseases. Ayurvedic medicines are prepared in many forms and consumed in a number of different ways. They may be in Syrups form, Paste form, Powder form, Tablet form, Capsule form etc. Ayurveda does not treat only a disease but its focus is on balancing of all the constituents of the body. Due to this reason, different patients with similar illness are prescribed different medicines. This in turn requires innumerous combinations of herbs and other medicines that are practically not possible to keep them ready in hand. This is why; all Ayurvedic Practitioners try to prepare their own medicinal combinations. These combinations are usually in powder form prepared by mixing suitable herbs as per the requirement of a patient. These Ayurvedic medicinal combinations are dispensed in single dose paper packets. Each tiny packet, called a “Pudiya”, is a hand folded square of paper containing a single dose of powder. Patient is advised to open this paper and ingest the powder in the pudiya, along with some other medicines, in a single dose.
A wide range of herbal powders and other natural products including herbo-mineral products, resins, juices etc are available for treatment. Each patient needs a different combination of these medicines. This is the reason why a single product prepared by any pharmaceutical company for a particular disease is not effective in all patients. An ayurvedic physician examines a patient and after taking a detailed history the treatment is planned as per the condition of the patient. Medicines are prepared as per his/her personal need.
A lot of time is spent by your doctor in making pudiya of your medicines. Usage of pudiya in Ayurvedic Treatment has many benefits. Some of the benefits are as follows:
It helps your doctor in planning a personalized medicinal treatment as per the requirement of your body. Doctor can combine and mix the herbs in many ways to make it suitable and effective for your health status.
Different herbal powders and tablets are grind into very fine powder using a kharal (hand grinder made up of smooth stone). This allows the medicine to mix in a proper manner so that they can give maximum effect.
Using pudiya allows your doctor to make sure that you are taking the medicine in proper dosage. Before making the pudiya, the medicines are weighted properly and then divided into required number of dosages. This is very benefitial for the patient as patients do not have to remember the dosage each and every time.
Pudiya are taken by putting the medicine on the tongue and taking some plain water or medicinal liquid after it. This helps the saliva to get mixed with the medicine in the mouth and the Digestion process starts from the mouth itself. This in turn gives the medicine to digest properly.
One of the major benefits of using pudiya medicines is that the medicines are made in the form of very fine powder. Digestive power of most of the chronic patients is very poor. At times it is very difficult for them to even digest the medicines. Making the medicines very fine helps in better absorption of the medicines and ultimately it gives positive effects in the treatment. Even in cases with very weak digestion power these medicines are easily absorbed.
It is a very common practice that a patient is advised many tablets to be taken at a single time. In some instances a patient has to take as many as forty tablets throughout the day. Using pudiya helps by putting some of those tablets to be put in a single dose. This keeps the quantity of medicine to be taken at a single time very low and is very comfortable for the patient. No need to take multiple tablets at a single time. Ayurvedic Treatment package usually contains only 1 pudiya and two-four tablets at a single time alongwith some syrup or juice if required.
Prepared dose in a handy packet of paper which is very easy to carry and easy to ingest makes it very convenient for the patient. Reduction in number of tablets and better absorption are added benefits by using pudiya in Ayurvedic treatment.

Having "Pudiya" may look old-fashioned to some of us but it is still the most powerful tool to plan an individualized treatment. Dispensing of self prepared medicines is a very common practice. Doctors from all around the world have more faith on self prepared medicines than medicines prepared by pharmaceutical companies.
